Accessibility in Hospitality
We chose an article from the Toronto Guardian talking about strides being made in the Hospitality Industry to be more accessible.
While many industries are beginning to focus on being more accessible and inclusive while examining how they can accommodate employees from different walks of life, it’s exciting to see the strides that have been taken in the Hospitality Industry.
The HWTC (Hospitality Workers Training Centre) is a non profit organization located in Toronto that provides many hospitality employment related services, including training and development for new and existing employees and networking for job seekers and employers. With the assistance and input of many hospitality workers they’ve recently developed a toolkit of resources for employers that assists with employing people with disabilities. They were recently awarded the David C. Onley Award for Leadership in Accessibility for their work.
As hospitality students-right now we may be young and able and fortunate in many ways, but as we’re all aware that can change at any time, and will definitely change with age. It’s great to know that there are agencies like this doing groundwork now that could benefit us during our career paths.
What do you think?
Do you think there needs to be a focus on hiring people with disabilities in the hospitality industry?
Do you see this as a positive or negative impact to our industry?
What do you think the impact will be on the economy? Will this change how you experience hospitality? In a positive or negative way?
Do you know of any other industries that are making these efforts?
